A close up view of a group of sunspots (cool holes associated with magnetic activity). The dark umbra and surrounding penumbra are easily seen as is the granulation or mottled 'surface' of the photosphere of the Sun caused by convection currents. The larger spots are tens of thousands of Kilometres across. (Swedish 1m Solar telescope, La Palma)
